Glienicke Villa and Park, located just outside Potsdam, form an important part of the Potsdam cultural landscape. Prince Carl of Prussia acquired the estate in 1824 for himself and his later wife Marie of Saxony-Weimar. Entirely under the impression of a trip to Italy, he had the extension and conversion work carried out between 1824 and 1827 according to plans by Karl Friedrich Schinkel.

First of all, the old billiard house on the high banks of the Havel was converted into a casino with a view of the lake. This was followed in 1825 to 1827 by the conversion of the manor house into a classicist villa. In 1832 a tower was added to the palace and in 1838 the view facing the street was enhanced by the lion fountain. Peter Joseph Lenné, who had begun to design the Pleasure Ground in 1816 under the previous owner Prince Hardenberg, was able to complete his plans under the new lord.
