Own productions and co-operations with various cultural institutions and artists make the Waschhaus a place of cultural exchange. A wide variety of art and cultural projects are realized and presented here. In addition to internationally renowned artists, the house, doing several theatrical genres, offers a platform for young up-and-coming talents in particular.

Since 1993, the Waschhaus has been working as a non-profit organization in the Schiffbauergasse and also plays in the Waschhaus Arena, the Kunstraum Potsdam and a dance studio (Oxymoron Dance) in the Studiohaus Schiffbauergasse.

The washhouse was built in 1880/82 as the "Royal Garrison Steam Washhouse" according to plans by Baurat Bernhardt and Garrison Building Inspector Bohm. It was used to clean the laundry of soldiers and officers not only on site but also of other barracks in Potsdam. The chimney at the washhouse was used for the large steam boilers and was particularly ornately decorated. After 1945, the building continued to be used as an industrial laundry, most recently by "VEB Rewatex" - until 1988, when a fire put the facilities out of operation.
