Today, nothing reminds us of the former barrier fences in the quiet Lenzerwische region. Several centuries lie between the two imposing viewpoints in the small Prignitz town of Lenzen. After all, the castle, which now houses a remarkable exhibition and a hotel, dates back to the 13th century, while the border watch tower on the Elbe Cycle Path just a few kilometres away, was built just a few decades ago. Up until 1990, soldiers guarded the internal German border where today cyclists enjoy a carefree and fascinating view over the Elbe valley to Lower Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt and even as far as Mecklenburg. On the route itself, there is nothing to remind you of the former barriers. Nature has long since regained the upper hand and is guaranteed to amaze day-tripper time and time again. The few houses in the Lenzerwische blend beautifully into their surroundings. Beyond where the route branches near Wootz, cyclists will find themselves very much on their own, accompanied at most by storks and other birds. A drip in Lake Rudower near Lenzen is the perfect end to the day in good weather.
