The Kloster Stift zum Heiligengrabe Monastery was built on a former place of execution and gradually transformed it into a place of pilgrimage. It is said that the sick were made healthy there and sinners received remission. To attract as many pilgrims as possible to Heiligengrabe, it was decided to replace the previous more modest building with a magnificent chapel for the pilgrims: the Heiliggrabkapelle Chapel, consecrated in 1512, is still the jewel of the monastery complex today. The crow-stepped gable on the west side is one of the most beautiful examples of North German brickwork workmanship.

After the Reformation, which brought to an end the belief in miracles, the Heiliggrabkapelle Chapel was initially used as a granary. It is only since 1840, when King Frederick William IV began the restoration of the church under monument protection, that it was once again used as a place of worship. The interior design dates back to 1903/04 and showcases the history of the monastery in the pomp of the imperial period.
