You simply cannot fail to be impressed by the sheer mass of the St. Jacobikirche Church. Built as a three-nave hall church around the middle of the 13th century, it bears all the symbolism of Gothic style: the high-arched windows, slender columns and the elaborate south-east portal. The tower extends to a height of 49 metres. However, this is only the remains of a building almost twice as high, which caught fire in 1916, and was covered by a simple saddle roof, which still exists today. The tower windows can be reached by climbing 182 steps, from where you have a magnificent view across to Havelberg Cathedral at a distance of 27 kilometres (the tower can only be climbed as part of a guided tour). Inside, the church only reveals the lightness typical of Gothic style in the chancel. In the main hall of the church, strong round pillars carry a towering, cross-ribbed vaulted ceiling. St. Jakobikirche Church was restored by Friedrich August Stüler between 1851 and 1854 and its paintwork was adapted to the style and taste of the time.
