The Protestant Stadtkirche St. Peter und Paul Church was founded in the middle of 13th century as a late-Romanesque basilica and was subsequently extended in the Gothic style. The altar was consecrated in 1479. The Marienkapelle Chapel was built on the south side in 1520, which was originally open to the church and contained the baptismal font.

The original high tower burned down in 1764 and was not rebuilt, so that today’s church tower is distinctly low. Nonetheless it houses three bells dating back to 1765. Inside the church, the Renaissance pulpit dating from 1610, the baptismal font from 1712 and the Wagner organ from 1742, as well as the choral pews and medieval wall and ceiling paintings, are all quite remarkable.

Every year, the MusikSommer concert series is held in the church with organ concerts between April and October. Every Tuesday morning during the opening hours of the coffee shop, the historic parish library can be visited with books dating from the 16th and 17th century in the former Superintendent’s Office at St. Petri-Strasse 7.
