Many movies were filmed in Prignitz. Or more precisely in Netzow – a small tranquil village on the eastern edge of the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve River Landscape Elbe in Brandenburg. At the centre of the shoot was the peaceful fieldstone church where parts of the movie “The White Ribbon” were shot in 2008. Netzow was chosen because the old cobblestones in the centre of the village were still largely preserved and therefore ideal for the setting in 1913/14 – the eve of the First World War. Incidentally, the planned asphalting of the road was postponed for the filming.

In his movie, director Michael Haneke shows a harmonious village community just before the beginning of the First World War. But then you see how the noble landowner, played by Ulrich Tukur, treats his workers and how the doctor (Rainer Bock) humiliates his housekeeper (Susanne Lothar) and abuses his daughter. These and other images of human cruelty are imprinted in the audience's memories and are at the same time a didactic play about the emerging Nazi era in which totalitarian Germany is being heralded.

For 30 days, the team filmed for this movie in the church and the youth centre in Netzow, amongst other places, as well as in the old Altes Pfarrhaus Söllenthun rectory in the neighbouring town of Michaelisbruch and in the sawmill in Zechlinerhütte. The residents in Netzow today are particularly proud that the village was selected from around four hundred possible other locations. The historical drama was awarded the “Golden Palm” at the Cannes Film Festival in May 2009.
