Bernd Streiter settled as a young artist in the municipality of Plattenburg, the location of northern Germany's oldest remaining water castle. There he gathered strength and inspiration for his iron “Charon” sculpture, which, according to Greek mythology, is the ferryman of Hades who carries souls of the newly deceased across the rivers Styx and Acheron that divided the world of the living from the world of the dead. Bernd Streiter now lives in Mödlich, where the Charon has found its final resting place on the Elbe dyke, directly on the Elbe Cycle Path. He looks serious and worthy standing there in the midst of the seemingly unspoilt nature of the Elbtalaue Biosphere Reserve in Prignitz
