The two pillars at the gate entrance reveal the medieval Jewish quarter, the historical significance of which is only recognised by archaeologists. It is considered as the only Jewish quarter within these building structures still in existence in Germany. Apartments, a synagogue and a “mikveh”, Jewish ritual baths, were located in this area, which runs in a trapezoidal shape along the River Stepenitz, in the period between the founding of the town and 1510 (expulsion of the Jews from Brandenburg). This quarter tells of a time when Jews naturally belonged to urban life.
