Kyritz was a garrison town and home to a cavalry regiment in the reign of Frederick II. Soldiers and horses were stationed in the citizens' homes. The king himself was never in Kyritz, but appointed his brother, Crown Prince August William, and his nephew, Prince Carl Frederick Henry, as local Officers-in-Chief of the Regiment. In the Seven Years’ War, the town had to pay special taxes to the king and to the Swedes, who temporarily occupied the town. Frederick II had an influence on construction work and life in the town of Kyritz.

Traces in the townscape

These developments can still be seen today in the appearance of the town. Some half-timbered houses from the 18th century have been preserved despite repeated fires in the town. The permanent exhibition in the Wegemuseum Wusterhausen/Dosse tells the history of the town of Kyritz as a garrison town.
