When you leave Gransee behind, you soon come to Gut Zernikow, where a very imaginative man ran a very special livestock farm. The route runs through mixed forest and the wonderful lakeland scenery of Stechlin nature conservation area, which is part of the Stechlin-Ruppiner Land Nature Park.

Gransee is the starting point for this second stage of the FONTANE.RAD route to Rheinsberg. The first stop is Gut Zernikow, whose former owner Michael Gabriel Fredersdorf fascinated Theodor Fontane because he breed silkworms. Today, an venue of mulberry trees and a silkworm exhibition on the grounds still bear witness to these activities. A detour to Neuglobsow at Lake Stechlinsee is a must for all Fontane fans. The lake lent its name to the novel “The Stechlin”. The tranquil village of Menz is home to NaturParkHaus Stechlin at the old District Forestry Office. It provides information on Stechlin-Ruppiner Land Nature Park. The tour goes right through the lakeland scenery. In Rheinsberg, at the end of the stage the castle invites you to take a walk through the park on the banks of the lake.

Finish: Rheinsberg

How to get there: From Berlin central station take the RE 5 (Stralsund/Rostock) to Gransee (about 45 minutes).

Return journey: From Rheinsberg, take the RB 54 to Löwenberg (Mark) and from there take the RE 5 (Elsterwerda) to Berlin central station (about 1 hour 45 minutes).
