The reformed pastor Andreas Heinzius, deployed by the Electress Louise Henriette after the Thirty Years’ War, found the Zehlendorf Church desolate and dilapidated. At his insistence, the ruins were transformed into a magnificent church in 1668. The construction was paid for from the church’s collections and income. It is reported that pastor Andreas Heinzius also took the opportunity during a visit from the elector during the autumn hunt to obtain funds directly from the elector. The electress is said to have provided financial support for the construction.

A half-timbered tower was added to the church building in 1694 and three new bells were added in 1704. The castle was then destroyed by a fire in 1731. Two years later, a new church was built based on a design created by Friedrich August Stüler’s successor, with a semi-circular apsis built made from yellow bricks. The square tower has a tall brick spire rising to a height of 28 metres.
