The Schnelle Havel (“Fast Havel”) is a right-hand side branch of the River Havel in Brandenburg. It branches away from the River Havel at Zehdenick and flows into it again at Oranienburg.

The unspoilt Schnelle Havel meanders its way through the Oberhavel district. The shore is usually covered with trees and shrubs on one side and can be easily fished from the opposite side. As there are only a few bridges along the route, shore anglers should first look at satellite images so as to avoid having to walk long distances through the riverbank woods. The river is on average barely deeper than one metre, but it has channels and holes that are up to 2.5 metres deep. The bed is mostly sandy but there are muddy holes in places which can sometimes be very deep. For this reason, you should proceed with care when wading. Water lilies and herb fields thrive magnificently in this shallow, slow-flowing water.

This is why the Schnelle Havel is sometimes difficult to fish in summer. For this reason, a boat tour is highly recommended. The best place to cast at hotspots is from under the overhanging trees. There are also some oxbow lakes along this stretch of river which are virtually impossible to fish from the shore. With a boat you can manoeuvre skilfully between the water lilies, however, and place the bait carefully on the edge of the vegetation.

Carps are plentiful in the oxbow lakes and ensure action-packed angling. The river also offers combative asp over 70 centimetres in length as well as perch that pass the 40-centimetre mark.

The Schnelle Havel is managed by the association Kreisanglerverband Oberhavel, reference number P 14-204. Guest permits are available. Fishing is free of charge for paying members of DAV Berlin and LAV Brandenburg.
