Neuruppin is Fontane’s birthplace – you can read about it and you can feel it, too. Nowhere else are there more memorials to the novelist. We take a break from the bicycle tour to follow in the poet’s footsteps on the Fontane town tour, allowing ourselves be whisked away to the 19th century. Just outside the centre is the grave of his youngest son Friedrich.

A walk through the centre of Neuruppin offers a welcome break from the bicycle tour. The Fontane town tour starts near Rheinsberger Tor at the memorial grove with the graves of Fontane’s mother and sister, before leading back to the town centre of Neuruppin via a detour to the grave of Fontane’s son Friedrich. In the centre is where Fontane himself was born – at what is now the Fontane House with the Löwenapotheke pharmacy – and there are lots of places that were important in his childhood and youth, such as the Parish Church of St. Mary’s, the Old Grammar School and the Superintendent’s Apartment, where Fontane lived as a grammar school pupil. On the town tour, you can also visit places that were not important until later in Fontane’s life, such as the Kühn printing works, Neuruppin Museum and the Predigerwitwenhaus (“preacher’s widow’s house”).

Length: 4 kilometres (1 hour)

Start/finish: Neuruppin

Logo/route sign: The Fontane locations are identified by means of signs in front of the respective buildings. A map with a detailed view of the Fontane town tour is available from the BürgerBahnhof tourism service at Rheinsberger Tor.
