The Kleine and Große Wummsee lakes nestle directly on the border to Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. The 12-kilometre-long circular lake hiking trail through the Wummsee and Twernsee nature reserve makes original natural habitats come alive and offers fascinating views of the crystal-clear waters. In 2021, the circular hiking trail was certified by the German Hiking Association as a quality hiking trail in the "Dream Tour" category. An insider tip!

About 4 kilometres north of Flecken-Zechlin is the "Grüne Hütte" hikers' car park. This is the starting point for the approx. 3.5-hour hiking tour around the three, partly crystal-clear lakes Großer Wummsee, Kleiner Wummsee and Kappellensee.

Always following the green dot on a white background, the route goes clockwise on natural forest paths through dense beech and mixed forests.

At the "Maronstein" obelisk, a monument to the royal head forester Louis Maron (1823-1885), there is a nice resting place with a magnificent view of the lake. To the west, two islands can be discovered: The "Little Horst" and the "Big Horst".

You can take another breather at the official bathing area of the Wummsee. Then it's off to the last kilometres of the circular trail around the smaller Kappellensee. On its southern shore you have a magnificent view of the open landscape. At the rest area, a plaque provides information on birds of prey and invites you to let your gaze wander for a while before returning through the forest to the hikers' car park.
