The red brick building at Bernauer Strasse 55 was built in 1902 as a “schoolhouse for the upper boys’ and girls’ school”. The three-storey clinker brick building features individual plaster and brick patterns and a single-floor classroom layout.

In terms of architectural history, it is a typical Prussian functional, turn-of-the-century, Gothic brick building that reflects the so-called Heimatschutz (“national heritage”) school of architecture – a deliberate blend of different architectural styles with regional elements.

The Kleinfeld gymnasium located directly on Bernauer Strasse was also built in the neo-Gothic style and dates back to 1908. It has an imposing gable on the north side with a prestigious motif.
