After the laying of the foundation stone in January 1913, the building was completed within a year at Easter 1914. The plaster structure along with the projections and recesses of the various sections and the elevation of the auditorium gives the building a central avant-corps effect.

The central relief group above the entrance arch symbolises the general teaching of science, the group on the left represents gymnastics and the one of the right singing. On the left and right there are ensembles representing the fields of chemistry, technology, agriculture, shipping, the military and art.

Between the four storey windows to the left and right of the auditorium building there are decorative bundles similar to those on the windows of the orphanage. The side wing projecting to the left is framed by three-quarter columns supporting an open balcony framed by balusters (single columns); here too, symbolic applications are featured. Two ravens are to be seen with a ring and chain as symbols of collection activity, along with the town coat of arms.
