The Cistercian monastery in Himmelpfort was founded in 1299. “Coeli porta!” - Himmelspforte (Heaven’s Gate) is what Brother Otto is said to have cried out when he saw the beautiful landscape from a hill that gave him a view of the narrow promontory between Lakes Stolpsee, Haussee, Moderfitzsee and Sidowsee in what is now Himmelpfort. A place far from world affairs and main thoroughfares, perfectly suited to welcome those in need of respite.

Only the outer walls of the monastery church remain from this period. A new monastery church was built by the outer walls in 1663. Concerts take place in the monastery church and inside the ruins in summer.

In addition to the monastery herb garden (with sales), which has been in operation since 1997, and imparting knowledge about growing herbs, the community centre was re-purposed in 1999 as “Haus des Gastes”, where Santa also lives in winter.
