The lock on the eastern outskirts of Oranienburg is part of the Havel-Oder waterway, so it lies on the major Berlin-Szczecin shipping route. This is why it is so big: the first lock (Lehnitz Lock I) allowed four punts to pass that were built to the Finow specifications. The second lock (Lehnitz Lock II) exceeds these dimensions. During the National Socialist era, the waterway and the lock were accorded special importance: they were to serve the transport of goods during the construction of the planned imperial capital Germania. Construction of the larger lock was completed in 1940.  The original lock dating from 1910 has since been shut down.
