The main actors are neat mansions, castles, parks and many small picturesque gems along a section of the Märkische Schlössertour. From this wonderful nature and rural tranquility you will be relaxed and inspired to return.

Wooded start into the gently hilly country between the Oder and Spree

The RE1 takes you and your bike out into the country and to Briesen in just 45 minutes. If you still need provisions, you can get them in the local supermarket. But then your bike rolls on the best asphalt and as if by itself through the fragrant forest that secretly hides Lake Petersdorf with its beautiful bathing area. You can make a first stop at Gut Klostermühle. The extensive area of the hotel and nature resort on the Madlitzer See is a truly harmonious place. Just take a break on the lawn, let your feet dangle on the boardwalk in the lake or taste specialties from the lake district in the monastery barn. How about a snack, tarte flambée or homemade cake on the terrace with a view of the lake?

Idyllic estate and park in Alt Madlitz

A little later you roll into Alt Madlitz. The aristocratic Finckenstein family wrote Prussian cultural history here. Count Finck von Finckenstein created the first English landscape garden in Brandenburg and made the castle an important site for the culture and art scene of the Mark Brandenburg in the 18th century. Many intellectual Berliners traveled enthusiastically to Madlitz. They valued the spiritual inspiration of the country life of the Counts of Brandenburg and took part in the hustle and bustle of music.

During a walk in the park you can perhaps understand why Brentano von Armin and the Humboldts liked to debate, philosophize, write poetry and simply linger here. Gentle hills, artificial gorges, orchards, small fields with gems in between and hidden, surprising lines of sight to the private mansion characterize the area in a mixture of park and wilderness. Today the Schlossgut Alt Madlitz is an ecological agricultural and forestry enterprise. In the small village you will also find a bed & breakfast, farm shop and the park café in the old smithy.

Traces of romance between the lakes

Pedal on to Falkenhagen via quiet and small country roads. Almost a little oversized, the largest medieval church in Brandenburg suggests that the small town should actually grow to a different size. But this is how you can let the cozy village charm affect you. You will find worthwhile breaks at the Swiss house with a terrace and lake view, in the popular Buchholz ice garden, on loungers at the old local distillery or at small swimming areas at the many lakes.

Where trains used to go, you now cycle through the wonderful landscape

The tour now follows the Oderbruchbahnradweg. The cycle path takes you along the old Oderbruchbahn route, which was the region's lifeline for more than half a century, connecting the small and large towns of the Oderbruch and providing a connection to the metropolis of Berlin. Here in the area of the Lietzener Mühlental nature reserve, you have fantastic views of the gently rolling landscape and the embedded lakes with white water lilies, with floodplain forest in between. Out of the reeds and reeds, you might hear the song of the reed warbler or watch the heron hunt. Geese like to use the surrounding meadows for a rest.

Unique in Brandenburg: a flying visit to the Templars in an environment like a painting

A few kilometers further, the Lietzen Commandery awaits you, a former branch of the Knights Templar Order. The historical building ensemble is surrounded by a picturesque hilly landscape - a sight that you will probably not find a second time in Brandenburg. This place of tranquility on the banks of the Küchensee is almost like a fairy tale. You can explore most of the area with a large park.

Members of the Knights Templar established the Commandery in the 13th century. It is the last surviving knight seat of the Templars in Brandenburg. The medieval systems are among the oldest of their kind in Germany. The aristocratic Hardenberg family has lived and managed the area since 1814.

Take the time to explore the grounds with information boards about the history. The functioning memory is, for example, a historical rarity. The small church, which is one of the open churches, exudes calm and wonderful tranquility. So you can take a look at the blue and white sky and the small altar. Go once over the orchard meadow with the old trees down to the lake. A boardwalk extends out, pond roses bloom. A great calm spreads. A little above is a bench under an old tree - the perfect place for your break and to take a deep breath.

The small village of Neuentempel is now very idyllic in front of you. The massive church is impressive. The old scythe forge on the outskirts is still set up as in the past and can be visited on request.

A shady break in the Diedersdorf Castle Park

The castle tour now takes you directly to Diedersdorf. Here you can take a round in the largely natural castle park, which adjoins the imposing manor house to the south. It is privately owned and can be viewed from the outside. Especially in hot summer temperatures you will find shady spots in the park with the small lake, watercourse and beautiful trees. Alternatively, there is the beer garden in the Ulmenhof.

Wide views of the Oderbruch, steeped in history

In Seelow you have a fantastic view to the east and into the Oderbruch. This area is especially famous because at the end of the Second World War it was the largest battlefield on German soil. The memorial, the small museum and the Soviet military cemetery tell of these times in an impressive and pious manner.

A few meters further you can make a detour to the Simon facilities at the Schweizerhaus Seelow. The former agricultural model estate and excursion restaurant is now a public park that is being rebuilt by the local heritage association.

On the last section, your calves are challenged again. From the height on the way to Gusow it is worth taking another look at the Oderbruch. Perhaps you will also discover one of the colorful pheasants that show up here from time to time in the meadows.

Before you start your way back with the regional train at Seelow-Gusow station, you can marvel at the architecturally interesting Gusow Castle from the outside. Or you can jump into the crystal clear water at the nearby Strandbad & Camping Oderbruch and treat yourself to a red fizzy drink as a reward.
