Start/finish: pumping station on Seestraße

Length: approx. 14 km

Course: Friedrich-Wilhelm-Kanal, Oder dyke, steep wall of Lossow, Brieskow-Finkenheerd

Route description

The tour starts at the pumping station on Seestraße, by the bridge over the Friedrich Wilhelm Kanal in the north-east of Brieskow-Finkenheerd. Directly behind the bridge, the path turns left and leads along the canal. Cormorants can be seen in the trees here, while ducks and goosanders swim on the water in winter. With a bit of luck, you might spot a kingfisher perched on a branch above the water. To the right, the meadows offer resting places for bean geese, whooper swans and mute swans in winter, while yellow wagtails and skylarks can be seen in spring.

After about 2 km, the tour reaches the Oder dyke. Here it is worth taking a detour to the left to the mouth of the canal into the Oder. The neighbouring forest is home to black woodpeckers, nuthatches and treecreepers. At the end of the 1.5-kilometre trail, there is a beautiful view of the steep wall of Lossow on the left bank of the Oder. The striking tower-like building with half-timbered storeys is the start and finish house of the replacement regatta course for the 1936 Olympic Games.

Back on the main route, the tour leads along the Oder dyke. If you want to enjoy the view of the Oder, take the dyke path. Sandpipers, red kites and black kites can be observed here, especially during migration. Alternatively, the path runs inland along the dyke through a tree-lined landscape where you can often spot red-backed shrikes, green woodpeckers, blackcaps and the occasional wryneck. The song of the nightingale accompanies this route, especially in the spring months.

After around 5 km, the route leads through a gate and follows a road for 1.2 km before turning right again. A varied section along a ditch leads through meadow landscapes where swans and geese, junipers and starlings can be found in large flocks in winter. In summer, grey and reed buntings can be heard in many places. After just under 4 km, the route reaches the Friedrich Wilhelm Kanal again, with the starting point at the pumping station already in sight.

Additional tips:

  • Best time: Spring and autumn offer ideal conditions for birdwatching, especially for migratory birds along the Oder.

  • Equipment: Binoculars are recommended.

  • Refreshment stops: At the end of Seestraße, at the junction with Lindenstraße, the fisherman Schneider offers fresh fish specialities from the smoker.
