Lake Scharmützelsee, also known as the “Märkisches Meer”, offers ideal conditions for birdwatching. The extensive expanses of water, reed beds and surrounding forests are home to numerous waterfowl, birds of prey and songbirds. While orioles and reed warblers make their presence felt in summer, goosanders and goldeneyes can be observed at close range in winter. The viewpoints along the lakeside promenade, in Diensdorf-Radlow and on the moorland footbridge south of the Großer Storkower See are particularly worthwhile.

Start / Finish: Ludwig-Lesser-Promenade, Bad Saarow

Length / Duration: 27 kilometers, 2 hours

Path condition / route development: predominantly paved and asphalted paths

Course: Bad Saarow, Pieskow, Diensdorf-Radlow, Wendisch Rietz, Bad Saarow

Route description

The tour starts in Bad Saarow, where the spa gardens offer ideal conditions for birdwatching. In summer, orioles, song thrushes and blackbirds are active here, while the eerie call of the tawny owl can be heard at night.

A worthwhile observation point is located on the promenade, where the reed warbler can often be heard on the footbridge. In winter, numerous goldeneyes, goosanders and coots can be found here close to the shore - often easy to spot even without binoculars.

Tip: A QR code from “ornitho.de” is attached to the jetty. This provides an up-to-date list of the most recently spotted bird species.

We continue along the western shore towards Kleiner Werl, an island in Lake Scharmützel. This area is particularly good for watching cormorants drying their wings.

On the eastern shore in Diensdorf-Radlow, there is another observation point with a high density of water birds, especially in the winter months.

South of Wendisch Rietz, a canal connects the Scharmützelsee with the Großer Storkower See. The moorland footbridge to the south-east of the lake offers a view of the surrounding wetlands, a Natura 2000 site with marshy meltwater channels and inland dunes.

Additional tips:

  • Best time: Worthwhile all year round, especially during the migration periods in spring and fall.

  • Equipment: Binoculars or spotting scope for optimal observations.

  • Refreshment stops: There are numerous restaurants and cafés in Bad Saarow and Wendisch Rietz.

  • Tour extension: The surrounding area can be explored on the 46-kilometre “Eagle meets zander” cycle route. This connects Bad Saarow with Storkow and offers numerous other nature experiences.
