Start / Finish: Köllnitz Nature Estate

Length / Duration: 9 km / approx. 1 hour

Nature of the route / route development: mostly paved paths

Route: Köllnitz, Philadelphia, Klein Schauen, Görsdorf-Busch, Köllnitz

Route description

Before setting off, it is worth taking a look over the Großer Schauener See, where common terns hunt over the water and ospreys swoop down on prey from high above. With a bit of luck, the muffled call of the bittern can be heard in the reeds.

The tour begins in a north-easterly direction along Groß Schauener Hauptstraße. After about 1.2 km, turn left into Philadelphiastrasse. After a further 1.5 km, you reach Philadelphia, where the route turns left into the street ‘An der Fasanerie’. Here we recommend a short detour into the neighbouring forest, where you can observe wood warblers, song thrushes, mistle thrushes and great spotted woodpeckers.

An additional tip:
to the east of Philadelphia are the Luchwiesen meadows, a valuable wetland area. After a short walk along the Luchweg, numerous water birds such as ducks, wood sandpipers, ruff and lapwings can be observed in spring.

Back on the main route, the tour continues along the Lindenweg, which runs along the edge of the forest. After about one kilometre, turn left and follow the road for 1.5 km to Wolziger Weg. Continue to the right until a path branches off to the left after about 1 kilometre. This leads through a cool forest with black woodpeckers and crested tits to Klein Schauen and on to Görsdorf-Busch.

Redstarts
and house sparrows can be spotted in the small settlement. From here, a picturesque avenue leads sharply left back to Köllnitz, accompanied by the song of

nightingales.

Additional tips:

  • Best time: there are good opportunities for birdwatching all year round

  • Equipment: Binoculars and sturdy footwear for possible detours into damp areas such as the Luchwiesen.

  • Refreshment stops: At Naturgut Köllnitz, there are sandwiches with home-smoked fish and cool drinks, while the Köllnitz farm kitchen and the Aalhof farm offer regional specialities.
