Far away from the coast, but not far from the lake, a dune suddenly rises up, looking almost surreal. It is defined by gnarled pine trees, open areas of sand and sparse dry grass.

The dune is a product of the last Ice Age and is still a safe haven for many rare species today. Many plants and small animals have adapted to the extreme conditions in the barren sands. Particularly brave visitors can go on a “lion hunt” to meet the greedy antlion face to face. This is the larva of the female ants that lurk in home-made sand funnels waiting for prey.

Keep your eyes open along the walk – you’ll be able to glimpse many rare species of birds, such as the cuckoo, black kite, spotted woodpecker and wood lark.
