The canoe tour from Guben along the eastern border river to Fürstenberg is far from an ‘old hat’. The unspoilt character of the river Neiße makes the route very popular among water enthusiasts. The shores in the areas around the border that used to be less frequented have maintained their unspoilt appearance in many places. The power of the water provides for a strong current at the point where the Neiße flows into the Oder. It is therefore a tour with beautiful views of the natural river banks and a bit of a thrill.

The traditional hat makers’ town Guben is a good starting point for the tour along the water border between Poland and Germany that is formed by the rivers Oder and Neiße. In addition to its historic industrial sites, the town also features a number of attractive churches.

Start: Guben
Finish: District Fürstenberg in Eisenhüttenstadt
Length/duration: 28 kilometres / 2 days

How to get there:
  • Public transport: From Berlin, take the RE1 (Cottbus) to Guben (about 2 hours)
  • Car: From Berlin via the A12 and B112 to Guben (about 2 hours).

Return journey:

  • Public transport: From Eisenhüttenstadt, take the RE1 (Magdeburg) to Berlin central station (Hauptbahnhof) (about 1.5 hours)
  • Car: From Eisenhüttenstadt, take the RE1 (Cottbus) to Guben to return to your car (about 20 minutes)

Tour description:

The area around the Neiße terraces in Guben is a suitable starting point for this dynamic canoeing experience. Going north from here, the Neiße quickly picks up speed (5 to 6 kilometres per hour). Care should be taken at all times, as the current will carry you along, but not necessarily always in the right direction. The river flows into the wider river Oder near Patzdorf. A good place to take a break is the water gauge cabin here.

The Oder is much deeper than the Neiße and most of all, it is far wider. It has a rather strong current and there is busy ship traffic. However, canoers can enjoy wonderful views of the two wide shore areas. The vast riverscape shows off its most beautiful side here. The destination of the two-day tour is located along the Oder-Spree canal, at the ramparts in the district Fürstenberg. Being a part of the industrial town Eisenhüttenstadt, Fürstenberg allows for interesting insights into the history of urban planning and development in the former GDR. There are restaurants and other facilities, as well as a train station.

Nautical information: Challenging tour. The Oder is far deeper and wider than the Neiße. The current is rather strong.
