Noiseless boats and the tranquillity of winding streams in unspoilt nature: these are the aspects that make the Alte Oder ideal for water touring. The straightening of the river and utilisation of the Oderbruch area for agricultural purposes by Old Fritz are well-known historic facts. Luckily, the original route of the Alte Oder was preserved here, allowing visitors to enjoy relaxed paddling tours in the beautiful and quiet nature.

Start: Rest area for boaters near Reitwein
Finish: Rest area for boaters near Gorgast
Length/duration: 13 kilometres / about 4 hours

How to get there:
  • When travelling from Berlin by car, take the motorways A113 and A12 and the main road B112 to the rest area for boaters near Reitwein (1.5 hours)

Return journey:

  • From the rest area for boaters near Gorgast take the B1/B5 to Berlin (about 2 hours)

Tour description:

Not only water enthusiasts are familiar with the starting point Reitweiner Sporn, a forested range of hills with top air quality. The hillside location attracts paragliders on sunny weekends, and the participants of the Reitwein skating half-marathon also come here every year. Regular flooding is a risk even to the higher parts of the area, due to the direct vicinity to the straightened river Oder. Memorial stones were put up to commemorate the tragic floods of 1947 and 1997, when dramatic action was taken to save the embankment.

Tip: A special historic site in Reitwein is the shelter used by the chief commander of the Red Army in the legendary battle at Seelow Hills. The weekend after Pentecost is also a fixed date in Reitwein’s calendar: The annual wedding market is popular among visitors.

The green stretches of Alte Oder are characterised by stunning views and plenty of shade, making them ideal for a break or for taking in the vast landscape. The Oder passes underneath the road B1 near Maschnow, Germany’s well-known east-west connection on land. Soon after, the waterway passes underneath the Berlin-Küstrin/Kietz-Kostrzyn railway line.

The destination of the tour is the rest area for boaters that is very close to the centre of Gorgast. The fortress in Gorgast that was built in 1880, is well-worth a visit. It remains largely intact due to its lack of strategic importance to the military. Not far from here, you will find the village Golzow that became famous because of film maker Winfried Junge’s long-term documentary ‘The Children of Golzow’. There is a film museum, presenting the story through a time line and an exhibition.

Tip: Poland is just 5 kilometres from Gorgast, on the opposite shore of the Oder. The Küstrin fortress there is worth a visit. It is, for example, the place where the childhood friend of Frederick the Second was executed. Parts of the fortress have been made visible again, while others were taken over by nature.

Nautical information:  Unspoilt, outstanding flora and fauna
