St Mary’s Abbey in Neuzelle is known as Brandenburg’s baroque marvel. The single-nave originally late-Gothic church was comprehensively converted between 1650 and 1750. The richly ornamented altars that lend the church hall the appearance of a baroque theatre backdrop are particularly impressive. It is due to the fact that the monastery had very close relations with Prague at the time that many of the church’s features such as the stucco, wall and ceiling frescos and various statues, angels and cherubs are from the cultural area of Bohemia. The abbey’s breathtaking interior is unique in north-east Germany.
