When directors Barbara and Winfried Junge turned their idea of a film documentary into reality in 1961, few would have expected it to attract worldwide attention and mark a milestone in film history. But that’s exactly what happened when the film-maker couple first visited the small community in the Seenland Oder-Spree lake district in the early 1960s and began filming 18 young people born between 1953 and 1955.
Die Kinder von Golzow provides an film portrayal of the children of Golzow and how their lives developed over a period of nearly 50 years. The result is an important record of GDR history that is still quite unique. Consisting of 20 films. the documentary ultimately shows day-to-day life in the Oderbruch region during the GDR era – with all its longings, achievements, disappointments, fears and happy moments, too. Little Jürgen becomes a painter’s apprentice after finishing school, marries his childhood sweetheart Anita and shortly afterwards becomes the father of two children, eventually struggling with the consequences of the fall of the Berlin Wall.

The life of Marieluise takes a different turn: after school she trains as a chemical laboratory assistant and marries NVA officer Hans-Steffen, later giving birth to two daughters and moving from East Berlin to Troisdorf in North Rhine-Westphalia after the fall of the Wall. These differing biographies of the film’s protagonists culminate in some 45 hours of film material, making this the longest documentary in film history.

The sense of identification with this DEFA project is still so great in the municipality of Golzow that the sign at the entrance to the town has borne the words Ort der ‘Kinder von Golzow’ (Town of the ‘Children of Golzow’) since 2014. In addition, the unique long-term documentary has its own museum with fascinating exhibits that can be viewed by visitors.
