Perhaps it’s the Swedish Småland charm that makes Buckow a popular location for films aimed at children and young people. In 2013 the film Quatsch und die Nasenbärbande was shot in this small town in the Märkische Schweiz, for example. The neighbouring village of Bollersdorf has also served as a filming location – and there is mention of “Bollersville” in the film itself. But the name is intended to represent an entirely run-of-the-mill town in the middle of Germany.

Director Detlev Buck was on location in Buckow two years later, too: this is where most of the feature film Bibi & Tina – Mädchen gegen Jungs was shot. Buck adores the landscape here: he says it is the perfect film location for him because it is manageable in size but still has lots of restaurants, a cinema and hotels. Being close to Berlin is a great bonus too, of course. But it was mainly the beautiful Lake Schermützelsee that he and his team found irresistible after so many tough days of shooting. Buckow is also the only Kneipp spa town in Brandenburg. And what the Danube was to Sebastian Kneipp, the Stoebler is to water treaders in Mark Brandenburg – a lively little river that crosses the Märkische Schweiz Nature Park over a length of 25 kilometres.

Artist couple Helene Weigel and Bertolt Brecht also felt particularly at home here, choosing it as their summer residence from 1952 onwards: this was where Brecht wrote his Buckower Elegien in 1953. After his death in 1956, Helene Weigel continued to invite numerous guests to Buckow and, in addition to living in her apartment in Berlin, used the property as a retreat up until her death in 1971. Since 1977 the Brecht-Weigel House on Lake Schermützelsee has been a memorial.
