An imposing building with a fascinating and varied history set in the middle of a spacious park on the edge of Lake Storkow, Hubertushöhe Palace stands enthroned with numerous half-timbered elements and a striking octagonal tower – it has been used as a hunting lodge for wealthy entrepreneurs, an engineering school for inland fisheries and a hotel with an adjoining restaurant. Initially, the palace in Storkow served as a residence for Berlin publisher Georg Büxenstein, who was a water sports enthusiast. Among other things, the entrepreneur founded the Berlin Rowing Club with its clubhouse on Lake Wannsee. The makers of an internationally renowned series based in Potsdam-Babelsberg were looking for just such a clubhouse, so the building – whose construction dates back to the early 20th century – took on another important function as a film location.

And finally, for the first season of his successful series Babylon Berlin, director Tom Tykwer moved his film set to the Seenland Oder-Spree lakeland district. In this detective series revolving around Inspector Gereon Rath, the Hubertushöhe hunting lodge appears as an elite rowing club, with Lake Storkow standing in for Lake Wannsee. It is on the shores of this lake that Charlotte Ritter and her friend Greta Overbeck spend a day of fateful encounters that set the young police assistant off on a new trail.

Storkow has not just been the used as the scene of crime investigations, however. As part of the shooting for the comedy Irre sind männlich, director Anno Saul and his team used the setting as a seminar venue. It is in the elegant rooms of the palace that the two friends Daniel and Thomas take part in a weekend workshop to familiarise themselves with the family constellation therapy. The seminar participants get together by the lake – and one funny scene leads to the next.

Today Hubertushöhe Palace is used as an event location for weddings and conferences. The park is freely accessible to visitors and is a wonderful place to enjoy a relaxed atmosphere. It is only six minutes away by car from the village centre of Storkow where there are other historical buildings to discover, such as the town church and Storkow Castle. Meanwhile the interactive park Irrlandia – MitMachPark is a great place to enjoy with the family.

  • Country of production: Germany
  • Distributor/broadcaster: X-Filme Verleih
  • Cast: Volker Bruch, Liv Lisa Fries, Leonie Benesch

Irre sind männlich

  • Genre: Comedy
  • Description: What do you have to do to make an impression on the ladies? Friends Daniel and Thomas certainly go to all kinds of lengths: they even sneak into group therapy and do family constellations to win over the opposite sex. Unfortunately, the two hobby psychologists quickly lose track of what’s going on – and the meetings increasingly develop into a post-coital stress test. Caught up in it all are Bernadette, Sylvie and Mia, who are every bit as crazy as the boys themselves. At some point, the network of relationships becomes so inscrutable that you can’t help thinking: who needs therapy more – men or women? Here’s a tip: to err is human, but erring is not necessarily limited to the male sex – at least not in this story.
  • Directed by: Anno Saul
  • Country of production: Germany
  • Distributor/broadcaster: Constantin Film/Chestnut Film
  • Cast: Fahri Yardim, Milan Peschel, Marie Bäumer, Peri Baumeister
