What do the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin, Sanssouci Palace in Potsdam, Berlin Olympic Stadium and many other important buildings in Berlin and Brandenburg have in common? They were all built using limestone from Rüdersdorf – a small town about 30 kilometres east of Berlin. Nearly 800 years ago, people there began to quarry the limestone and then burn it; by the 17th century if not before, Rüdersdorf was considered the leading supplier of building material for the Berlin and Brandenburg region. Open-cast mining remains in operation to this day: the Rüdersdorfer cement plant exports this building material throughout Europe.

The historic part of the plant is now an industrial monument, however, and has been converted into a museum park which documents the history of limestone mining. Constructed according to the designs of famous architects such as Schinkel, the technical buildings form a unique architectural ensemble. Photographers will find plenty of impressive motifs here.

On the other side of the characteristic Rüdersdorf smokestack row lies the abandoned chemical factory, which has become a popular film location in recent years. One episode of the American series Homeland was filmed here, and a refugee camp was built nearby. In the film trilogy The Hunger Games – Mockingjay, the factory served as the set for District 8. The rock group Rammstein shot a video in this spectacular setting, too, and actor George Clooney filmed scenes for The Monuments Men here. The site itself is not open to the public but it is possible to visit the adjacent museum park. In 2018, scenes for the German-Swedish spy series West of Liberty were filmed in the old chemical factory: this series was shown on ZDF-NEO in 2019.
