From the 24th floor of the Oder Tower – a landmark that be seen from far afield – you have the best view of what Frankfurt an der Oder has to offer: lakes, rivers, greenery and culture. The city’s landmark and the centre of social life is the 14th century church of St. Marien with Brandenburg's largest church bells. The most precious treasure here are the three fascinating choir windows with their medieval stained glass.

Situated on the easternmost edge of Brandenburg right on the Polish border, Frankfurt and its Polish counterpart Słubice now form two halves of a European twin city – separated by one of the longest rivers in Europe, the Oder. It was this river that was the focus of the 2003 film Lichter. Directed by Hans-Christian Schmid, it describes the lives of the people who lived on this border when it could not be freely crossed as it can today. They try their luck on both sides of the river – characters such as the bankrupted mattress salesman, played by Devid Striesow.

Director Andreas Dresen also has a fine sense of cinematic realism: he draws his inspiration from the close proximity between the capital of Berlin and the Brandenburg province. Despite the social hardship portrayed, his protagonists never lose hope and always retain their humour – as for example in the 2002 tragicomedy Halbe Treppe which was shot in Frankfurt (Oder). Starring Axel Prahl in one of the leading roles, the film is about two couples who go through a marriage crisis. As is so often the case, Andreas Dresen makes extensive use of a hand camera and allows the actors to improvise freely.

Frankfurt (Oder) is also the setting for individual episodes of the ARD crime series Polizeiruf 110 starring Horst Krause.
