The Wriezener Alte Oder is a section about 25 kilometres in length and runs from Wriezen to Hohensaaaten – partially as a nature conservation area – ultimately flowing into the River Oder. For the angler, the Wriezener Alte Oder doesn’t just have lots to offer – it has everything! From asp to zander – virtually all indigenous fish species feel at home here. Eels and pike over one metre long, combative asp, all manner of small and medium-sized catfish, tench and occasionally heavyweight carp have reportedly been caught at this unspoilt site with an average water depth of a good 3 metres.
  • Size/depth: 60 hectares, 3 metres
  • Fish species: eel, zander, pike, catfish, white bream, burbot, asp

Bait fishers can expect great conditions at the Alte Oder. With a little ground feed, roach, rudd and others can easily be lured onto the hook. Fishing with a feed basket is very successful, too. If you use quick-dissolving attractant feed and three to four maggots on a small hook, you’ll find the tip of the feeder rod rarely stands still. Eel anglers will repeatedly make the acquaintance of small catfish during their nightly sessions – the latter love the taste of the earthworms and maggots. Carp anglers have to be patient. Professional fishermen will occasionally catch one in their nets. In the much narrower and more unspoilt section between Wriezen and Oderberg there are many reed beds, weed fields and old trees in the shore area – ideal shelters for various fish species. Particularly worth mentioning here is the fact that burbot is frequently caught here in the cold season. In the summer months, heavy weed growth can make fishing difficult.

The Alte Oder changes in character between Oderberg and the Hohensaaten lock. From here it is considerably wider and is used by shipping traffic for almost 8 kilometres as a section of the Oder-Havel waterway. From late summer onwards, predatory fish anglers can look forward to increased catches of pike, perch, zander and catfish. As the cold weather sets in, more and more burbot can be caught, too. The area around the lock at Hohensaaten is considered a hotspot. In summer, good asp catches are often made here with swiftly guided plugs just below the surface. But good zander catches are also frequently reported, with weighing in at more than 4 kilos.
