When people talk about Lake Klostersee, they rarely fail to mention the (much larger) Kietzer See, too. There’s a good reason for this: the two lakes virtually entirely surround the village of Altfriedland, so 80 per cent of it is actually closed off to land access. No wonder fishing has a long tradition here. Back in the 18th century, the two lakes served as productive fishing waters. Today, the Altländer Fischerfest is held once a year with a big fireworks display and all kinds of fishing games.

The banks of this approximately 60-hectare Lake Klostersee are largely surrounded by forest and reeds, so there are only a few fishing spots on the shore. Outside the bathing season there is a lot of fishing in the bathing area near the monastery ruins on the south-eastern shore. Some great eels have been caught here.
  • Size: 60 hectares, depth: 13 metres
  • Fish species: pike, zander, perch, carp, eel
  • Tenant/operator: Schlaubefisch e.G., Ernst-Thälmann-Str. 31B, 15306 Falkenhagen,

             Telephone: + 49 33603 210

The forest path on the west bank, opposite the village, is passable. Here the Lake Klostersee is almost completely surrounded by densely growing reeds. Carp and tench migrate along here, while pike lurk on the sloping edge, lying in wait for their prey. The best way to fish this side of the lake is by boat. Another impressive highlight: like bright blue arrows, kingfishers can sometimes be seen chirping just above the water surface.

In addition to carp, tench and pike, there are also eels, perch, grass carp, bighead carp, zander and lots of whitefish to be found in Lake Klostersee, which is up to 13 metres deep. With good tackle you can catch plenty of bream, roach and rudd.
