The Löcknitz (also known as Mühlenfließ in this area) flows through the 68-hectare Lake Maxsee, which drains into the Spree. The lake is almost completely surrounded by woodlands, while the shores are set amid reed beds, marsh forest and some swamp areas. The average depth of the rather murky water is two metres, but there are also areas where the depth is up to four metres.

The following fish species occur Lake Maxsee (some in considerable numbers): eel, perch, grass carp, pike, carp, tench and various species of whitefish. But zander have also been caught here, and fish such as chub, bleak and gudgeon are also at home in this elongated stretch of water. Anglers after carp and grass carp weighing more than 30 pounds come to Lake Maxsee with great regularity. At weekends, the lake sometimes sees quite intense fishing at times, and many of the promising shore fishing spots are occupied. Those who prefer things a bit quieter may like to try their luck during the week.

The islands are off limits, but fishing from a boat (without motor) is permitted. Bream are abundant in Lake Maxsee, and they rise to the bait. One pleasing piece of information here: many night fishermen have been happy to catch eels measuring up to 80 centimetres in length using worm and bait fish. The zander are more difficult to catch: they are mainly found in the deeper areas.
