The symbol of the black long-eared owl against a yellow background associated with this garden is familiar to all visitors who care about nature conservation. The Haus der Naturpflege (“House of Nature Conservation”) in Bad Freienwalde honours the work of the creators of this symbol, Erna and Kurt Kretschmann – pioneers of nature conservation in eastern Germany.

Environmental education and training are the main focus here: for this reason there is an adjoining demonstration and teaching garden with a nature conservation museum and observation tower, mulch garden, lecture facility and guest house with the Erna and Kurt Kretschmann archives. Anyone wishing to stay for longer can check into a “hay hotel” with a training kitchen for a genuine hands-on experience. The demonstration and teaching garden is home to over 1000 plant species.

The museum run by the association Haus der Naturpflege e. V. documents the decades of work done by the Kretschmanns – the log cabin was where the two conservationists lived and worked. Incidentally, the Eulenturm (“Owl Tower”) is one of the four towers you have to climb if you want to acquire the “Tower Diploma”.

Year of construction: after 1946
How to get there: Car: B158; train: RE3 or RB24 to Eberswalde, then RB60 to Bad Freienwalde
