We owe the idea for Kleiner Spreewald Park in Schöneiche on the eastern outskirts of Berlin to the inventive innkeeper Max Mann, who in the 1920s created an artificial canal landscape similar to the Spreewald to attract more guests to his inn. It was used for barge trips – as in the Spreewald itself, a little further away.

Today the park is run by the association Verein Naturschutzaktiv Schöneiche e. V. and offers a variety of educational and adventure trails. In the partly silted up water basin of the former swimming bath, fish are very much at home between reeds and water lilies and there is a huge dinosaur on the riverbank. Wooden bridges and footbridges provide access to large parts of the park once again, enabling the natural landscape to be explored. The walks include a water trail, an art trail, a nature trail, a trail of the senses and a geological trail. Meanwhile a herb show garden introduces visitors to native plants.

If you wish to bring children here, there is plenty of space for them to play to their hearts’ delight.

Year of construction: 1926

How to get there: Car: B1 exit Schöneiche; train: S3 to Friedrichshagen, then by tram to Schöneiche
