Length/duration: approx. 3.5 km, 2-3 hours

Path conditions: Forest paths, easy to walk on

Route: Mixdorf, Kupferhammer, mill (Schlaube), Försterfriedhof, Forsthaus Siehdichum, Schlaubebrücke, Hammersee, Mixdorf

Route description

The best way to get to the hike around the Hammersee is by bike via Mixdorf. The Kupferhammerweg trail leads in a south-easterly direction to the historic Kupferhammer. It is worth stopping at the mill to spot grey wagtails breeding on the Schlaube.

The route continues southwards along the eastern side of the Schlaube through a varied forest. An impressive concert of forest birds can be heard here, especially in spring: Crested and fir tits, summer and winter goldcrests, woodcreepers and great spotted and black woodpeckers are active here. It's worth taking short breaks to listen and watch.

At the Försterfriedhof, we turn right and reach the Forsthaus Siehdichum, where we park our bikes. From here, we follow the signposted hiking trail S2 for about 100 metres before turning left in a southerly direction onto the forest path to the Schlaubebrücke. After a good 200 metres, we reach the bridge, from where goosanders can be observed on the Schlaube. Kingfishers can also be seen here regularly, lurking on small fish from overhanging branches.

After the bridge, we follow the Schlaube to the Hammersee. There are wonderful opportunities for birdwatching along the lake: in winter in particular, common mergansers and goldeneyes are frequently seen. The neighbouring forest is home to numerous species of tits, song thrushes and woodpeckers.

After about 1 km, we reach the next bridge over the Schlaube at the confluence of the river with the Hammersee. From here, we follow the Schlaube northwards until it flows back into the lake. The route runs idyllically along the shore and again offers great views of water birds. Finally, we reach the forester's cemetery and return to the starting point.

Additional tips:

  • Best time: Spring and winter offer the most exciting observation opportunities.

  • Equipment: Binoculars are worthwhile to recognise the details of the water birds.

  • Where to stop for refreshments: At weekends, the restaurant at the Forsthaus Siehdichum is an ideal place to stop for refreshments after the tour.

  • Extension of the tour: The route can be combined with a cycle tour through the Schlaubetal valley.
