Start / Finish: Car park at the Güstebieser Loose ferry landing stage

Length: approx. 15 km

Route: Güstebieser Loose, Oder dyke, Neulietzegöricke, open countryside, Güstebieser Loose

Route description

The hike starts at the car park of the ferry landing stage on the L34, opposite the Polish village of Gozdowice. It is already worth taking a look at the Oder here, where sandpipers and little ringed plovers rest and black kites and white-tailed eagles patrol.

After about 200 metres along the L34, the path leads to the right over the Güstebieser Alte Oder. From here you follow the dyke for about 5 kilometres along the river. In the spring months, pond warblers and reed warblers, bluethroats and reed buntings can be heard here. With a bit of luck, you may even spot a black stork.

After 5 km, the path turns left at the first opportunity and continues for 2 km to Neulietzegöricke. Here you can take a break in the Kolonisten Café. At the end of the village, turn left towards the Oder until after another kilometre, the path turns right. The path now meanders through open countryside before reaching a small settlement. At the first crossroads, follow the path that turns left. House sparrows and redstarts can often be seen in this settlement.

After about 2 kilometres, you reach the Güstebieser Alte Oder. The last few metres of the hike run along the L34 back to the starting point.

Additional tips:

  • Best time: Spring and autumn are particularly good for birdwatching, as many migratory birds are resting.

  • Equipment: Binoculars are recommended for better observation

  • Refreshment stops: The Kolonistencafé in Neulietzegöricke offers an ideal opportunity for a break with regional specialities.
