Start / Finish: Kloster Neuzelle

Length: 8 km

Course: Neuzelle, Waschhausweg, Portgraben, Oderdamm, Neuzelle

Route description

The hike begins at Kloster Neuzelle, one of the best-preserved monastery complexes in Europe. From Stiftsplatz, the path leads through the baroque monastery garden, which you leave at the south-east corner and turn left into Waschhausweg. Directly behind the railway tracks, turn left again onto a field path that runs along the Portgraben for 1.5 km. Lapwings, grasshopper warblers, corn buntings, stonechats, meadow pipits and yellow wagtails breed in the wet meadows here.

At the end of the path, the route turns right and continues for 1 km in the direction of the Oderdamm. After another 1 km, you reach the Waschhausweg again and cross the dam. From here you have a fantastic view of the Oder and its groyne fields, which create still water zones. Depending on the water level, numerous water birds such as goosanders, goldeneyes and sandpipers can be observed here. Birds of prey such as white-tailed eagles, marsh harriers, kites and ospreys use the floodplain as a hunting ground.

In the cold season, large flocks of grey, white-fronted and bean geese as well as whooper swans gather here. Winter visitors such as hen harriers and great grey shrikes can also be found here. Wrynecks, nightingales, tree pipits and middle spotted woodpeckers breed in the wooded area by the dam. The wryneck prefers to feed on grass ants, which it finds in abundance along the dam.

The trail leads back to Neuzelle via the Waschhausweg for just under 3 kilometres. During migration periods, numerous waders such as wood sandpipers, wood sandpipers, ruffs, greenshanks and snipes can be observed in the lowlands. Whinchats also rest here on their onward migration.

Additional tips:

  • Best time: Spring and autumn offer excellent observation opportunities for breeding and migratory birds.

  • Equipment: Binoculars are recommended.

  • Refreshment stops: The Landhaushotel Prinz Albrecht at the monastery pond offers an ideal opportunity for a break.

  • Worth seeing: A visit to the baroque Neuzelle monastery complex rounds off the tour perfectly.
