This stage is full of contrasts and little adventures: after a leisurely start through woods and fields, the Rauener Mountains suddenly rise up in the middle of the flat landscape of the Mark. The climb takes you an astonishing 150 metres up. Massive Ice Age boulders and, at the top, a viewing tower with panoramic views crown the ascent. Nowhere else on the 66 Lakes Trail does the route climb higher. Below, the spa town of Bad Saarow stretches out on the shores of Scharmützelsee.

Description of the route / worth knowing: From Fürstenwalde railway station, the route takes you through the town centre, over the Altstadtbrücke bridge to the opposite bank of the Spree. Passing through suburban areas, woods and fields, you reach the hamlet of Rauen and the Rauener Berge hills. After passing the remains of a ski jump, the next landmarks are the massive Markgrafensteine: enormous boulders from the last Ice Age, the largest in the whole of Brandenburg. From there, it is not far to the viewing tower. It takes 209 steps and a small fee to reach the platform. The view sweeps far across the landscape, an endless expanse of blue and green, and on a clear day you can see as far as the Berlin TV Tower. The route then continues downhill along quiet footpaths via Petersdorf to Bad Saarow, the end point of the stage. There, you can round off the hike in the spa gardens, at one of the restaurants on the lakeside promenade, or even at the thermal baths. From the historic station, you can take the train back to Berlin, changing at Fürstenwalde.
