Nestled in the Saarow hills and just 60 km from Berlin's Alexanderplatz, Brandenburg's second largest natural lake offers the ideal backdrop for a lakeside hike along the banks of the glittering Scharmützelsee. The one-way tour for late riser along the western shore of Lake Scharmützel offers magnificent views and numerous natural bathing spots and beaches. Even Fontane affectionately called the lake the “Märkisches Meer”, which impresses with its perfect vacation scenery. Here you can finally get out on an extended half-day tour, get some real exercise and recharge your batteries in beautiful natural surroundings, while the crystal-clear Scharmützelsee is omnipresent. There are real culinary highlights by the water in Bad Saarow at the end of the tour.

Route description

Scandinavian flair in Wendisch Rietz

After about 70 minutes, the regional train stops in little Wendisch Rietz. Perhaps you can already hear the seagulls calling? Here, the Scharmützelsee opens up to the north and you set off on the lakeside hiking trail. On the way through Wendisch Rietz, you will pass a few restaurants; next to the campsite, the “Heimathafen bei Uwe” offers fish sandwiches, fish dishes, coffee, cake and drinks. If you take a detour into the harbor area, you can catch a glimpse of Sweden. The red and yellow wooden houses greet you from the water in typical Scandinavian style.

Nature and steep banks

After crossing the village, you dive deeper into nature. Next to the nature trail, the terrain slopes down towards the lake and you walk through the steep forest towards Saarow beach.

The perfect lake view

... can be enjoyed from the terraces of the “Dorsch”. When the sun is shining and a light breeze is blowing, you feel like you're by the sea with a view of the marina. But you're in Brandenburg and the Dorsch uses regional ingredients: fish from Lake Scharmützel, cheese from the Marienhöhe farm, meat from Fürstenwalde/Spree and vegan chili sin carne.

Beach or sunbathing lawn

Need to cool off? The former Neptun lido with its lost-place character and the Kleistpark and Lustgarten bathing areas opposite Kormoraninsel offer fantastic views of the maritime hustle and bustle - and top-quality bathing water

Tour finale: sophisticated architecture and foodie hotspot in Bad Saarow

The “skyline” of Bad Saarow can already be seen over the last few kilometers. Magnificent historic villas line the lakeshore. It's time to unwind. Time to round off the late-riser tour with a culinary reward. Whether it's a classic beer garden under chestnut trees, a steakhouse, regional cuisine, an Italian restaurant or café, a ramen soup or a crossover between Peru and Japan - the choice is yours! How about a relaxed après stroll at Nobelscharf? Avocado fries, currywurst and champagne are not mutually exclusive in this casual beach bar.

Refreshment tips:

  • Wendisch Rietz: Homemade lemonade at the Ateliercafe

  • Saarow beach: Das Dorsch

  • Bad Saarow: Saarow Marina ice cream parlor, Scharmützelsee beer garden, coffee roastery, Amiceria, Le Gâteau rose and many more options
