The successful story of the oldest spa town in Mark Brandenburg started with the discovery of springs with healing powers in 1684. From 1840, moor bath treatments for a variety of disorders were provided here, which meant that Bad Freienwalde was granted the title of a Moor Baths and Moor Spa from 1864. It only took its present name in 1925.

Arrival/departure from Berlin by the RE3 (Schwedt) to Eberswalde. From here, continue by taking the RB60 (Wrietzen) to Bad Freienwalde (about 1 hour).

Route description: The healing powers attracted many wealthy people. A walk through the spa gardens, created in the18th century to plans by Lenné will open up a fantastic view from the chapel above the adjoining clinic across the historic complex, with the Old Spa House, the Kurfürsten Spring and the therapy centre. It was built in 1788-90 on behalf of King Frederick William II by Carl Gotthard Langhans as a bathing and lodging house for visiting nobles. The historic town centre, with over 100 magnificent listed villas and town houses in the Wilhelminian style, also shows how magnificent this popular spa town is. Freienwalde Castle is now a memorial to its former owner, the industrialist, critic of his times, author and Foreign Minister of the Weimar Republic, Dr. Walther Rathenau, who was murdered in 1922. Culture is also important in the town. Don’t miss the opportunity to attend a concert in Kirche St. Georg church, which has been converted into a concert hall, or a visit to Oderland Museum or the Haus der Naturpflege.
