The water glistens in the sun, the lake shimmers first deep blue and clear, then again strikingly turquoise. But you are not on the Mediterranean, but on the enchanting Schermützelsee! On this relaxed half-day tour in the Märkische Schweiz nature park, you will be presented with all the advantages of this scenic gem: hiking trails through typical gorges that the last Ice Age cut into the slopes, fantastic views of the wooded hilly landscape, summer villas from the turn of the last century and then this lake that always has you under his spell again.

Your hiking experience:

  • Close to nature and quiet: on the move in the oldest and smallest nature park in Brandenburg

  • Up high: through hillside forests, throats and gorges to the best viewpoints

  • Stylish: arrive with the Buckower Kleinbahn

  • Dreamy: Brecht really liked the hidden jewel Buckow.

  • Refreshing: stop for a swim in the lido or at hidden natural bathing spots

Start and finish: Buckow market square / Buckow train station
Length: 9 km / 2.5-3 hours
Getting there by public transport: RB26 from Ostkreuz or Lichtenberg (hourly) to Müncheberg, then briefly continue with the Buckower Kleinbahn (May 1st - October 3rd) or the 928 bus to Buckow Markt
Departure public transport: Buckower Kleinbahn or bus 928 to Müncheberg, then RB26 (hourly) towards Berlin

Start in the tranquil Buckow

You can make the stress-free journey from Berlin, which takes a little more than an hour, particularly iconic. From Müncheberg, take the lovingly cared-for Buckower Kleinbahn instead of the bus - a moving museum that takes you through the forest and into tranquil Buckow in 14 minutes. If you decide to walk in a clockwise direction, you will come to the first great view of the lake on the Bismarckhöhe. The path continues past the Brecht-Weigel-Haus. Today an authentic place of German literary history, the artist couple spent many summers in the neat house during their lifetime.

Wild, protected and clear

On the way to the White Lake, the small neighbor of the Schermützelsee, you pass some particularly wild and swampy areas on the trail. It's almost reminiscent of the Everglades in Florida. You won't meet alligators, but other protected species such as beavers, otters, kingfishers, whitefish and wolffish live here. But coots and gray herons also appreciate the protected zones in the nature park, which include the entire Schermützelsee. As a clear water lake, it also has an impressive water quality with visibility depths of between four and eight meters!

On the high path

A highlight: the Panorama-Höhen-Weg. This section of your tour lives up to its name and offers you changing views of the turquoise Schermützelsee and the idyllic Buckow opposite. Boards of the nature park administration provide information about the impressive throats and gorges formed on the west bank. If you are already feeling hungry, go to the Fischerkehle restaurant and let yourself be pampered on the terrace above the lake. The ups and downs will get you moving. Take a deep breath in the smell of the forest floor and leaves, this is pure relaxation!

Kneipp on the Stobber

Your tour ends in Buckow, the pretty town right on the lake. Small alleys with arable houses and villas lead to the market with cafes and restaurants. You can refresh yourself in the official lido with wooden diving tower or at the water treading points of health guru Kneipp: right on the lake and on the Stobber river near the watermill in the castle park. Take a stroll through the old town, treat yourself to an ice cream, snack or coffee and make yourself rested and relaxed on the way back to the big city.

Plan your late riser tour to Märkische Schweiz now!
