Thuringian Forest in Brandenburg

The mountains are only about an hour away from Berlin! The train brings you relaxed to Bad Freienwalde, where your tour starts. Passing the market square, you get to the Weinbergstraße and the first ascent to the historically artificial ruin, the oldest viewpoint in Bad Freienwalde. Here, high above the city, you can enjoy the wide view over the small town and the Niederoderbruch with the island of Neuenhagen for the first time.

The next highlight awaits you just a few meters further: from the “Thuringian View” you can see the famous ship lift in Niederfinow in the distance. The scenery with forest, hills and small mountains reminds you of the low mountain range - almost like in the Thuringian Forest. The nearby refuge offers shelter in bad weather.

With the inventors of the conservation owl

Now you are passing the House of Nature Care. You should definitely take a break here and explore the idyllic show and teaching garden and the small nature conservation museum. It is the legacy of Erna and Kurt Kretschmann, pioneers of East German nature conservation and co-inventor of the owl, the now all-German nature conservation symbol on a yellow background. The Owl Tower offers you an excellent all-round view of the garden and the wooded hills around Bad Freienwalde. In the distance, the neighboring country Poland greets you.

Spectacular: how the ski jumpers look into the abyss

The tour takes you to the Papengrund. Here at the sports stadium you will definitely be amazed: a ski jumping facility in Brandenburg? Even with four jumps - simply unbelievable. Bad Freienwalde, with its extensive hilly terrain, was once a winter sports center that is otherwise only found in Bavaria, Thuringia, the Giant Mountains and the Harz Mountains. Even today, competitions are still held in Germany's northernmost winter sports center. The best: You can climb the 38 meter high jump tower and experience the view of the ski jumpers before the jump. By the way: the hill record is 72 m!

Final vision of Fontanes Bad Freienwalde

In a wide arc you hike on over the wooded mountain slopes south of the city, steeply up to the fountain chapel and then over to the imposing Wilhelmshöhe observation tower. If you are already feeling hungry, you can make a 20-minute detour to the idyllic location of the Blue Onion Café by the pond and treat yourself to some refreshment and regional specialties.

The path finally leads through the village to the castle with park, past the beautiful St. Georg concert hall and through the historic town center to the market square. Here at the church you should definitely marvel at the large-format city view: a scene to which the famous writer Fontane visited the city. Plan your late riser tour in the "Brandenburg low mountain range" now!

Extra tip:

  • Save with the tower ticket: The tower ticket, which costs 6 or 3 € (adults / reduced), includes admission to all 4 Bad Freienwalder towers.
  • In the House of Nature Care (Im Haus der Naturpflege), you can find out more about the ecologically sustainable horticultural methods used there, uses of herbs and nature conservation options for the home garden through guided tours and seminars.
  • Probably the most glaring elevation profile that can be found over 25km of hiking trails in Brandenburg is offered by the great Gipfelstürmer-Tour: from Falkenberg to Bad Freienwalde, 4 towers, even more great views and almost 1,000 vertical meters - a real 'roller coaster' with crisp inclines from the beginning until the end. But be careful: If the tour is too difficult, your condition was too weak ;)

Refreshment tips:

Bad Freienwalde: The best egg liqueur cake in Brandenburg in the Blue Onion café, organic in the Immergrün shop café, pizza in La Fontana and other options around the market square and adjacent streets.
