Ever since Fontane described the “Canton of Buckow” in his “Wanderungen durch die Mark Brandenburg” (Walks through Mark Brandenburg) in 1862, there has been no end to the stream of visitors hungry for nature, wanting to immerse themselves in a world of healthy nature, culture and tradition. Buckow is not only a Kneipp spa town, but also the pearl of the Märkische Schweiz region, with six lakes, gardens and promenades, walking paths, hotels, restaurants and a very special atmosphere. Lake Schermützelsee, covering 145 hectares, is undoubtedly the largest lake in the Märkische Schweiz and also the centre of both the town and the region. Its emerald-green water expresses a particular enchantment and is ideal for swimming, rowing and fishing. A trip in a motor boat is an absolute “must” on any trip to Buckow, as is the journey on the Museum Railway that takes visitors, as it did 120 years ago, from Müncheberg Station to the little “Kneipp capital”. Artists and creative spirits will discover Buckow, now as then, to be a haven and a source of inspiration. Probably the most celebrated summer visitors were the artistic couple Bertolt Brecht and Helene Weigel, who lived in their summer house until their death. The house is still a memorial site and museum to these important representatives of the art of the theatre today. Visits to the Railway Museum, the Ice Age Garden or the “Zum Alten Warmbad” Gallery will make sure that your trip is never boring!
