Atonement crosses - signs of the case law of that time

Time and again there are stone witnesses to be discovered along the way in the region. The village church on the Wellmitzer Anger can be seen from afar. The neo-Gothic brick building is surrounded by a churchyard wall. In the shade of tall trees there are old tombs with an unusual history.

In Wellmitz, a traditional farming village, four atonement crosses are a reminder of the case law of that time. The stone crosses from the Middle Ages are under monument protection and were erected in the old churchyard or on the churchyard wall. The legendary atonement crosses are the only ones of their kind in the region. According to legend, a large farmer in Wellmitz had four sons, but they always argued because each of them wanted to take over the farm. Like every Sunday, my parents went to church. The brothers started a violent argument and attacked each other. In their unspeakable rage they picked up scythe, flail, pitchfork and ax and killed each other. One's legs were cut off, the other's arm cut off and the third's head. The fourth, who survived, had the stones put up and took over the farm.

The atonement crosses are located directly on the monk tour.
