The military structure was built during World War II, expanded by the NVA of the GDR and used for airspace surveillance and central sierene triggering, taken over by the Bundeswehr. Once the bunker was decommissioned for military use in 1995, it was covered up. After its re-opening in November 2005 and following extensive reconstruction work, regular guided tours are now hosted in the enormous, more than 9000-metre, well ventilated and illuminated complex. The 2.5-hour guided tour of this active technical monument includes technical demonstrations and practical presentations on secrets of times gone by: SS newsroom, telex, the central siren activation of the GDR, aerial surveillance in the GDR in the central command post and by the German Armed Forces, the most modern computer centre in 1987 and the secrets of the nuclear bunker.
