The reason for the construction of this rather unassuming Diplomatentreppe (diplomats' staircase) was the "40th anniversary of Liberation" in 1984. There is a striking row of large trees on the land side of the Oderdamm. The trees were to be cut down as part of the renovation of the dyke, as is required by the DIN 19712 standard for river dykes. Trees are considered dangerous, because when water levels are high and the soil is soft the trees can topple over and tear huge root craters into the dyke. Following protests of a citizens' initiative, a pilot project was started to preserve the dyke trees in Reitwein. A sheet pile wall was erected by the diplomats' staircase, and the dyke was filled on the water side a little further downstream. Now the trees no longer pose a risk. It now remains to be seen whether they will survive under these new conditions.
