The Frederick William canal that originally featured 14 locks and 8 bridges, was the first connection between the rivers Oder and Spree. For more than 200 years, it was the most important trade route between Wroclaw and Hamburg.  The destruction of the locks towards the end of World War II gave rise to the development of a unique natural idyll. The cycle path along the banks of the canal is ideal for walks and bicycle tours.  As one of Germany’s oldest inland waterways, Friedrich-Wilhelm-Kanal is listed as a historic monument. It now characterises, in particular, the townscape of Groß Lindow. The best way to discover the diverse flora and fauna along the canal is a trip on a traditional ‘Treidelkahn’ boat.
